Ship design is an “evolutionary” process, with each variant reflecting knowledge gained during prior iterations around the design spiral. With the increasing accessibility of high-order CFD tools, it becomes attractive to apply CFD for early-stage hydrodynamic design. However, the most cost-effective and best outcomes are achieved using tools that are properly matched to the task at hand. This is particularly true for early stage design, where knowledge is foundational and about big decisions.

This presentation describes the rationale and organization of a “tool chain” for hydrodynamic analysis, from [1D] parametric studies through full [3D] CFD. Each link in the chain allows for optimization and evolution of the design space in a way that “sets the table” for the next higher-order analysis, yielding knowledge to support the important decisions of the day. A number of case studies are used to illustrate examples of design space optimization using lower-order tools, with discussion of the technical merit and justification for follow-on CFD. These case studies include an optimized bulbous bow retrofit for a research vessel, design of AUV geometry for a minimum propulsor energy objective, as well as hull form optimization for a waterjet-driven patrol boat and a twin-screw Ro/Pax ferry.
